Sakut. 𐤎𐤊𐤅𐤕 Sukkot. Feast of Tabernacles. A time to dwell with Yahuah 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 in nature and soak in His goodness. Look at that view! Those sunrises were absolutely gorgeous. We cannot wait to be back out there again!
There’s something lovely about eating your breakfast by the fire and studying. Each year we add a little something to the packing list. 2024 was the year I brought my foldout table to be able to eat and study where I wanted. My husband also did a copper coil attached to an old milk jug to make us hot water for doing dishes and it was a level up!
We had some fun filled daily activities. There was plenty of kayaking and fishing. We had to be creative to think of ways to get the energy spent on those children’s tanks. They loved playing nerf guns, water guns, water balloon fight, and whittling by the fire. We planned out organized games of badminton, volleyball, kickball, but they didn’t get done. Maybe next year!
We enjoyed reading Yubalayam (Jubilees) together and furthering our studies on the Creation calendar. (Which we still have much to learn!) We always encourage having something for the children to do during these studies to keep their hands busy and minds focusing.
Arts & crafts are always a big hit and many of the projects are things you already have at home or can find for cheap. We painted on paper towel tubes and taped the noise blowers to those party ones that honk when you blow into them on the end for a homemade shupar (ram’s horn).
Perler beads were a hit and a blast from our childhood past. We had a few shapers in there and also some other random creations!
My son cut out pieces of wood for us to use and we also had some flat rocks. We painted them with acrylic paint and paint pens. Once they were dry we did a sealer but I’m pretty sure you could use mod podge.
Our Menu for the week looked a little like this:
Breakfast: fresh milled pancakes & chicken maple sausage, french toast, beef & turkey bacon, homemade biscuits and chicken gravy, granola + yogurt parfait, sprouted oatmeal, sourdough bagels + cream cheese, English muffins, organic cereal
Lunch: beef hot dogs & mac n cheese, grilled cheese & tomato soup, flatbread pizzas, leftovers, snackies. Fruits & veggies . One day we were baruk (blessed) when the men caught enough bass fish to fry and we served with homemade fries.
Supper: roast/carrots/potatoes, philly cheesesteaks flatbreads, patty melts, sweet & sour chicken + rice, steaks, grilled chicken legs, cheesy hamburger pasta, taco soup, chicken & dumplings
Dessert: Smores with vegan dandies marshmallows, hot cocoa, warm apple cider, popcorn
We would love to make more things over the fire as well. I’m just not as comfortable with it. One friend made some make ahead meals and warmed up breakfast burritos over the fire. Another one made sourdough bread in the dutch oven to share with the camp. I love seeing the creativity that others bring to the table. Please share any ideas you have with us in the comments!
We are trying to figure out the perfect way to make smores casserole in the cast iron pan. We layered the graham crackers in the bottom, then organic chocolate chips, then vegan dandies marshmallows on top. But the marshmallows didn’t get done and the graham crackers were toasty. So we’re gonna flip it next time and not put the graham crackers on until the marshmallows are melty.
We also did a Science experiment with a garden hose to make the fire different colors. (We’re not in charge of anyone playing with fire, just so you know!)
Another friend printed off and laminated Bible bingo for each family to take with them. They play this over and over again. Great for younger and older children! We highly recommend having a game time together. She also organized photo frame sakah (tabernacle) craft and took every family’s photo with a polaroid for a cute craft.
Because we’re set apart and no longer subscribe to much of the Hollyweird, D!sn3y, superhero, etc garbage, as you can imagine, your children don’t get to frequent the movie theatre. So they were super excited when our friends brought a movie projector and we got to create our own theatre. This was definitely a fan favorite and hope to keep it as a tradition for years to come.
We pray you all have a lovely feast season! Shalum.
