The days of summer are upon us, but the panic sets in. What curriculum do I need for September when school starts back up? What do I need to catch my children up on before we start back to hitting the books? Well, I have encouragement for you, sister.
REPEAT AFTER ME: “MY CHILDREN’S TRAINING AT HOME DOES NOT HAVE TO LOOK LIKE THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM.” There, does that feel better? Check your area’s homeschool requirements and go from there.
Step 1: Determine your child’s learning style.
Step 2: Determine your learning and teaching style.
Step 3: Combine and come to a happy sweet spot.
Step 4a: If your child thrives on a schedule, loosely create one, don’t be afraid to make it more of a gentle rhythm than a strict to the minute routine.
Step 4b: Schedule in 2nd breakfast, no but seriously having snacks nearby will help immensely for bookwork.
Step 5: Allow time for discussion & encourage children asking questions (on topic)
Step 6: Is your child really not listening or do they have a short attention span? This is where how a child learns really comes into play. They may need something to keep their hands busy.
Step 7: Subjects in real life are not categorized so stop compartmentalizing them completely. Example: Baking a cake includes recipe (reading), measuring (math), temperature (science), consistency (science), and taste testing (science). The same would go for building a tree fort or a raft to float on.
Step 8: Don’t compare. My homeschool will not look like yours and that is okay.
Step 9: Be confident enough to step away from any curriculum that isn’t working for your family.
