For years I didn’t take care of my skin. I was unaware the products I was putting on it were actually making my complexion worse. So I sought to buy more and more makeup to cover up my blemishes I was embarrassed about. I started to realize over time what was in the products and realized to improve the skin, I must focus on nourishing it from the inside out and also letting it breathe. With time, I’ve found good facial care leaves your skin room to shine. There’s something special about whipping up your own facial products and creating a skin routine.
Face mask recipe
1 tsp bentonite or kaolin clay
optional – 1/2 tsp activated charcoal powder
1 tsp beet root powder, spirulina, or tumeric
1 tsp honey
1 drop orange essential oil optional
a little water to mix into a good consistency
There are many benefits to bentonite clay. For skin, it is nourishing, full of minerals, pulls out heavy metals, and fights bacteria. Kaolin clay is the most gentle and mild for sensitive skin. Activated charcoal powder absorbs bacteria, draws out toxins and chemicals, and neutralizes the skin. Honey is great for removing dead skin cells and keeping skin hydrated. Beet root is great for eliminating toxins and sloughing off dead cells for a soft supple look. Tumeric targets pores, calms the skin, and helps reduce acne and scarring. Spirulina is great for aging skin, acne, or UV sun damaged skin. Orange essential oil is great for smooth looking skin. *This oil is photosensitive so it’s best to save this for a night routine or when you won’t be in sunlight for 12 hours*
My daughter enjoys a simple face mask – honey & spirulina mixed with a little water. It’s great for sensitive skin.
Leave the mask on for 5-10 minutes allowing it to dry, then wet a washcloth with warm water and gentle rinse it away. Apply a couple squirts of apple cider vinegar (ACV) toner (1/2 c ACV + 2 c water in a spray bottle) and follow up with some jojoba oil.
The cool thing about this mask, is that it can double as a stinky pits detox mask as well! So I like to apply it, hop into a soaking bath with a conditioning mask on my hair and sip a creamy chai tea. Blog post on that coming up!
