I’m often asked what we do for homeschool. We kind of lean a little eclectic with a bible based foundation, a gentle approach, lots of hands on learning, and much outdoor nature time. Whew that’s a mouthful! We have really enjoyed finding our groove and it’s a great topic since we’ve been through a few curriculums in the past 6 years.
Our core curriculum flow looks like this:
- 4 days a week we read sections from Scripture. We like to follow Daily Bread Journal (check out their app too) We take a couple days to read the Torah portion & do our fun Torah in the Home studies to go with it. We take the other 2 to read the Neviʾim (Prophets). We save our Ketuvim (Writings) for after dinner and take turns reading as a family.
- 2 days a week History from Foundations Press. This year we started over at creation so we are in Ancient History.
- 4 days a week Language Arts. We do use a language arts because my daughter was needing extra help learning to read. We didn’t even attempt this until 8 as I believe they should be ready and eager. We do 100 Gentle Lessons by A Gentle Feast.
- 2-3 days a week we are more intentional with Math. We really enjoy learning math through manipulatives, games, helping dad build, baking and measuring, telling time, calculating in grocery stores. We enjoy Wild Math for ideas of learning through life.
- Science is really studied through living books on nature, homesteading, foraging & medicinal plants, essential oil reference guides, animal guides, animal and human anatomy. All of it is really centered around learning about יהוה creation and gaining a deeper understanding.
- Tea Time – one day a week we pick in the winter to do a bigger tea time. My kids don’t really drink tea, but we try to make a special dessert and enjoy a slower pace. The kids really enjoy picking a handicraft to work on while I do a read aloud book usually from the Charlotte Mason Ambleside booklist.
- Biblical cosmology 1-2 days a week, see this post
I pray that helps you glean a little insight to what we do daily. We choose a 4 day a week gentle flow because 1 day a week we drive into the city, go to the chiropractor, get groceries, run errands, and come home exhausted unloading everything. We’ve learned you can really learn anytime, anywhere, and anyhow.
